STEVENS family, Meadle, Buckinghamshire
« on: Tuesday 18 September 18 10:22 BST (UK) »
I'm starting to research my grandfather's family.

He was Thomas STEVENS, b. 1896, to George Stevens (b.~1852) and Ruth (née Allen) (b. ~1855).

From census returns I can trace back the patrilineal line to William Stevens (b. ~1826) and William Stevens (b. ~1806), but no further, and matrilineal lines are difficult.

Before incurring the costs of requesting marriage/birth/death certificates, I was wondering if anyone else has already covered this ground and would be willing and able to share their discoveries.

Thank you

You are in luck.  This is my direct family line. ;D

George Stevens is my Great Grandfather.  Son of Thomas Stevens and Sarah(nee.Jarvis).

I assume you have Thomas Stevens marrying Gwendoline Ann Hogg, in Lincolnshire, 1926.

Ruth Allen is the daughter of Elizabeth Allen. b1831. Princes Risborough, Bucks.  Her birth name is Sarah Angelina Ruth Allen, born 24th Dec 1856, Lockington, Saunderton, Buckinghamshire.  She was illigitmate.

Her p.o.b is given as Illmer in all census returns. 1861 census, she is living with her Aunty Mary Cummings(nee.Allen).  She was baptised as Ruth Allen, 2 Nov 1864 @ St Dunstans, Monks Risborough, daughter of Elizabeth Allen.

Her death is a complete mystery, and not found in 11 years of trying.

As for the Stevens line, I have gone back to Jeremiah Stevens, 1743. Bledlow, Bucks.  Son of John & Mary.

The Allen line, I have back to Ralph Allen c1710. (unknown). dies 1762, Princes Risborough, Bucks.

Steve. :)

PS. Howdy cousin. ;D

That's amazingly good news! ;D

I had found Ruth Allen as a visitor (age 6) in the 1861 census staying with the Cummings in Meadle - thank you very much for explaining the family link and about her mother.

I can't imagine how much work you must have done to trace back both family lines to the 1700s!

Would love to see these details - would that be OK? I'm new to genealogy and don't know how this is usually done! ???

Elizabeth Allen's life is quite a journey, in family terms.  She had 7 illigitmate chldren in total. Some of which I cannot trace.
She eventually married John Orchard in 1884 @ Monks Risborough.  at the age of 53.  John Orchard was a widower.

I will private message you.(PM) ;)

I'm not sure if this will help but I found the following:

On the 1871 census there is a Ruth E Allen states born about 1855 Illmire, Buckinghamshire. A servant (Housemaid age 16) with the Wright family in Chipping Wycombe.

There is also a GRO marriage at the end of 1881 in Aylesbury but it will need further research.
