I would have thought it was very interesting, nothing to get hung up about. My mothers father was illegitimate. She told me. I remember him, one of natures gentlemen.

I've recently found out who my great grandfather was via DNA.  I just wish my mother was here so I could to tell her. She would have loved to have known - but her surname was much more interesting than if her grandmother had married her natural grandfather  :D

The reason that I flagged it was that it went beyond the usual ethnicity bit to the genealogy.

I Searched for 'Guardian' first, before making my duplicate comment!

Something quite similar happened to me, but I mentioned some names on my website, years before my recent DNA test.  Two separate people contacted me to say that they were my half-cousins, who I knew nothing about.  There had been family lies going back to the 1920s.  Being so close (495cM), I would have noticed them from my DNA results, if they hadn't previously found me, as they both just happened to have been tested as they just happened to be interested in genealogy.  It seems my grandmother had a child, my father, brought up by his grandparents.  He always thought his mother was his big sister, my lovely auntie.

I was chatting to one of my classmates this afternoon and he told me about his brother's findings via DNA and paper trail/usual genealogical research.

He found that one of his ancestors had two families - one up here and one in the SW. The ancestor used to work on a boat carrying coal from N/C to ?Plymouth and had a wife in both ports.  The DNA matches confirmed their suspicions.

Added - the class was totally unrelated to Genealogy  ;D
