1st Batt Coldstream Guards September 1916
« on: Tuesday 18 September 18 17:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for info or if anyone has access to the War Diaries for September 1916 attack on Ginchy, Somme.  Am researching a Lance Corporal Lionel Westall, number 16653, who died from a  head wound received on 15th Sept in the attack, he died the next day, aged 20 and is buried at Corbie.  He was a school teacher and I have his records but am after a account of the attack if possible - or a pointer as to where I may find one.  If anyone has the actual battalion diaries I wondered if there was any mention of him

Many thanks
Margaret

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7351842   Download for £3.50.

The diary is also on Ancestry if you have a sub I'll post a link.

Sometimes as ell to read the higher level diaries, Brigade and Division to put it in context of the overall battle but I'd suggest you start with the battalion.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

If the link causes a problem, put 1219 in the Keyword section of the War Diaries search box and nothing else.  1 CG are the first in the results, trawl through to Sep 16.
