Complete Beginner in Irish research needs pointing in the right direction
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 00:58 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Now this is a real newby question - sorry!. I am familiar with FH research in England and Wales and also to some extent Scotland but have just been asked to help someone with a family tree which has Irish Ancestors. I have looked through the stickies and am just getting more and more confused ???

Now I appreciate that the records are not as complete as England and Wales but what is really confusing me is which websites I would need to use for

a) looking at the 1901 and 1911 Censuses - are the websites different for Northern Ireland and the Republic?
b) BMD certificates similarly are there different websites to use dependent on which part of Ireland you are looking?
c) Parish records. I see some seem to be on FindMyPast but is there anywhere else to search?
d) Griffiths valuations.
and anything else you think might be helpful.

Once I can get a handle on where I need to look I might be able to make a start but until then...... ::)

Thankyou for your patience

Jackie  :D

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/   covers all of Ireland 1901 and 1911

BMD certificates similarly are there different websites to use dependent on which part of Ireland you are looking?  No...not until 1921!

There is no need to say Sorry for asking sensible questions!

Forget about what you don't know... start with what you do know!!

For example... Who are you looking for on 1911 Census?  Location?  Just put Surname and County, then search...see if you can find them!!

You seem to enjoy researching so why not post someone's name/age etc for Census to get you started??

OK... I don't know who you are looking for but this is the type of thing you can try if you were looking for a Marriage for John Smith around 1880.

So you can change it to someone you are looking for, years etc after 1845 if not RC, 1864 if RC
