Question about closed record on 1939 register
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 19:42 BST (UK) »
Hello rootschatters,

Hope you all are well

After 8 years of assistance and searching, I managed to break down a brick wall that had been bothering me immensely.

In the 1939, my great grandmother Frances is living in Islington with her husband Walter Alfred Francis Tillcock.

There is a closed record of an individual living with them. I understand that to open the record, you need to provide proof of death. However I do not know who the person is to provide proof.

The person might either be a relative of Walter or Frances, or might be either Frances's son Joseph Fitzpatrick or perhaps it might be a child of them both that I have been unable to find, though this is unlikely as there are no Tillcocks born a mothers maiden name Fitzpatrick in the gro.

Any advice would be appreciated in finding a way around this

my thanks

A long shot but...if you can find Walter and Frances on an Electoral Roll the hidden person might be with them.

I took a look at your question and unfortunately came to the same conclusion as you. I did not find a child born belonging to Tillcock/Fitzpatrick. The search would be from December Quarter 1935 (marriage) to December Qtr 1939. The only thing I did find was they moved lodgings in 1939 but stayed in Islington. The owner of the first house in 1939 was Kate Anneveld of 24 Hampden Road, Islington. Electoral Rolls.

Do you know whether Joseph is still alive?
As I understand it, Find My Past will only reveal redacted  entries if they are given a death certificate of the likely entry.

Do you belong to Find My Past, Simon? If so, they will open the the record free if you have proof of death. So you've got nothing to lose by asking them and supplying a copy of Joseph's death certificate. If it isn't him, they won't open it.

Otherwise you have to go through the National Archives and they charge a fixed charge of £23.35 for this service, so probably not worth it.

Thanks

I'll give it a try. Joseph would have been about 11 or 12 years old at the time. I can send them a scanned copy

"Joseph died in 1995 in Scotland. I have his death certificate"

Scottish Death Certificates have a column for the deceased person's Mother and Father. If known that should give you Joseph's parents.

You mention Frances had a son Joseph Fitzpatrick.  Was she previously married?

If so - any births under Tillcock would have her maiden name - not her previous married name
