Here is a link that may be interesting.
http://www.geocities.ws/lorrainepeak/ancestors.html

From this it seems that Ngati/Ngai Te Ipu may be around Whakaki which is north of Wairoa.

First of all apologies for not getting back to you all sooner.  I have been unable to use the computer for a few days.  Secondly, many thanks to you all for your help.

I had also been wondering about contacting Ngati Kahungunu and will now do that.

Shanreagh I went looking after all your first posts and found the same website.  I also found a website showing marae's in the Hawkes Bay region and Ngai Te Ipu marae is named Whakaki but the meeting house isn't named so it does make me wonder if it is a smaller marae.
There is also an email contact on that site so will try contacting them. Hopefully it will still contact someone as it was set up in 2007.

So lots of work to do.
Many thanks, M

Yes it is a small Marae but will be active.  I would contact the Maori Land Court for a person to contact either from the Marae itself or Wairoa Ngati Kahungungu.  Perhaps also the Wairoa Information Centre.  My home town......Wairoa.  :)

Hi All, am gonna jump in on this one too........ Riria Hopewai (also known as Lydia was my great great grandmother on my mums side, my mum was Edna May Dean, daughter of William Manaia Dean (Deam) Son of Sarah Simpson nee Deam, daughter of Riria Hopewai.

From notes from mum -  she also had a te moko on her chin. She had land, (I have the documents of land) that George Brewer Simpson seemed to be with her for the land, as well as a previous maori lady Rakiraki also. I have been going through all my mum's documents she collated when she was researching our family history, and scanning and attaching to family tree in My Heritage. Its registered under my husbands name but its me on there doing my side lol.

Heres hoping we all find more info!!

Just a note on the hapu (sub tribe) Ngai  Te Ipu this is a hapu of the Ngati  Kahungunu Iwi from Whakaki a village 20 kms north of Wairoa in Hawkes Bay . Between Wairoa and Gisborne

I also now have the copy of the actual burial record of Riria from Shortland Cemetery records I got today from the Treasury. Her name on death cert and burial are both as Lirria, but her will says Riria so a bit of a mystery on the actual spelling of her name, and without the ability to get a birth certificate she will be listed in Find a Grave as Lirria (Riria)
