Newick family Bristol to Victoria Australia
« on: Friday 21 September 18 05:32 BST (UK) »
I have a photo taken about 1975 of 'Wally and Ruby' (presumably Wally 's surname was Newick but it may be that it was Ruby who was a Newick)
Wally (Walter ?)  would have been born around 1905 in Bristol but at the time of the photo he and Ruby were living in Victoria, Australia.

I have searched high and low for these two but with no luck.  I just wondered if anyone in Australia was researching a Newick family
Thanks
Mary

Thanks Cando, but this is a different Walter who married an Edith Middleton, lived and died in Bristol in 1964.

What other information do you have about these people?

Could they be siblings?

How do you know either of their surnames was NEWICK if the photo was titled "Wally and Ruby"?

Cheers

The photo is of my late husband's aunt Phyl  outside her shop.  Her name before marriage was Newick.
The note on the back  says 'myself, Ruby & Wally (Victoria) and Aunt Elsie (my sister)'

They all look to be in their 70's.  I have a very small photo of some of the brothers & sisters (there were 11 altogether) taken about 1925  and there is a similarity between Wally and one of the brothers.  Phyl was the youngest - born 1912.

I remember Phyl telling us that she had a visit from Wally and Ruby who lived I think not far from Melbourne.  I have checked Australian records as far as possible but no luck there.

Eight of the siblings died before 1970 - several in their 30's.  Only one brother, Henry,  was alive after 1950 - he died in 1972 in Bristol  and was married to an Evelyn Smith (no Ruby)

I can find no Ruby, born Newick, a couple of Walters but have ruled them out.

The only other thing I can think of is that Wally was a cousin whose parents emigrated to Australia in an earlier generation.  I think it's unlikely but I will pursue that.

I just wondered if there was anyone else on this site researching this family.

Many thanks

Mary

Just trying to find any clues - and there's not many!

Looking at (UK) freebmd there are two NEWICK marriages shown for a Walter NEWICK (from 1915-1970), and none for a Ruby NEWICK.
One of these is Walter NEWICK/Edith MIDDLETON marriage which you have eliminated.

The other which doesn't look promising:
Sep quarter 1933, registered Bristol
Walter F NEWICK, Irene M E BRYANT

Of course, they may not have married in the UK at all.

Like you, I can't see any suitable mentions on Australian records, nor in TROVE (digitised newspapers)

On-line indexes here tend to stop earlier than uk records. Sorry - no help at all really.  :(

Phyllis and Elsie were children of Henry and Abigail (nee ELLETT) NEWICK.

I do not see a child to this couple named Walter born around 1905.

Why do you think they were relatives of Phyl at all?

Thanks Judith and Sue for your replies

My feeling that Wally was a relative is from something Phyl said years ago but I can't remember exactly what.  Also in the photo she is holding his arm in a very affectionate manner.

Her sister Elsie (also in the photo) had a couple of children so I think I will see if I can follow them up and see if they or any of the children they might have had, might be contactable and if so if they know anything.

Many thanks for all your advice

Mary
