How to get a bulk correction to UK BMD errors
« on: Friday 21 September 18 16:29 BST (UK) »
If you search BMD for the rare surname Jarvin, all records, you get a very odd result. You get very few hits except for deaths in September 1880 when you get a huge number with names starting A to M, and births in June 1910 when you get a huge number of hits with names starting L to W. When you call up the images you can see someone has mistaken the common name JARVIS for the rare name JARVIN. So there are 83 incorrect entries.

Although they offer a mechanism to correct a single entry, it is not clear (to me) how you would try and get a bulk correction like this.

Given Jarvin is so extraordinarily rare I am thinking the few records (apart from the ones I mention above) are due to transcription errors into the original BMD registers. After all, when you are down to just a few individuals you can spot the births, deaths and marriages don't tie up - except for the first 1842 entry of birth and death in Halstead, but that was an area with another unusual surname - Tarvin. So again I suspect whoever copied into the register misread the name.

If you look at the original BMD register the name is Jarvis, it is FreeBMD which has transcribed it wrong.

They have all been transcribed by "Sally"

I have just notified freebmd of the 1880 deaths error - if you look at the correction page it also gives you an opportunity to select this option
Also applies to one or more following entries

Thanks Rosie, didn't spot that option, I will try that for the 1910 births errors.

What a damned awful form - it took me about 12 goes to report the error in the 1910 births. What on earth is a GRO fiche? Does that come with chips? Very unclear what you put in the source box in the end I just put "Your JPEG".

I always put 'GRO index your website'   I have not had any problems with that so far.  I sometimes forget to tick the box in the middle of the writing  ;D

GRO fiche would be the GRO index available to view on fiche at some libraries and LDS family history centres

When submitting corrections to freebmd I put

"have viewed scan source to verify" and then spelling, page number etc

Never gets rejected but I don't know whether the comments are read at their end.
