William Bowthorpe.
« on: Friday 21 September 18 17:21 BST (UK) »
I am looking for William Bowthorpe born 1853.  I have him in the census of 1881 married to Julia(nee Howard).  I have also found a William Bowthorpe in 1871 living as a grandson but am not sure if this is him. I am unable to find him in 1861 on a census.  He was born in Norfolk possibly in Great Yarmouth.

In the 1881 Census William gives his occupation as Clicker. The 1871 Census William the grandson also gives his occupation as Clicker and pob as Gt Yarmouth. I think they are very likely to be the same person.

I wonder how accurate William was with his age in the 1881 census.

The closest birth record I can find is this one:-

BOWTHORPE, WILLIAM       -
GRO Reference: 1856  M Quarter in GREAT YARMOUTH  Volume 04B  Page 21

No mother's maiden name suggests that he was illegitimate.

What I gave you was the birth registration from the GRO website.  If you wish to get the full details you will need to order the certificate or pdf from the GRO.

A little dash instead of the mother's maiden name usually indicates an illegitimate birth.

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

If you haven't used the GRO website before you will need to register.  When you have done that you can then order a certificate.  Most people will order a pdf for this year range as it only costs £6.  A full certificate will cost £9.25.

If you get stuck ask.  We are here to help.
