I am trying to trace the notice of the award given to 2nd Lt W C Long. I have found the notice in the war diaries but can not found any ref in the London Gazette. Please can anyone help.

Presumably you have noted he was commissioned from the ranks into the Royal Fusiliers (London Gazette 24 August 1917) having previously served in the Rifle Brigade and reached the rank of Acting Serjeant.

Looking at the citation, the battalion, brigade and divisional war diaries, we can tie down the area where he disposed of the machine gun post pretty accurately.

However, you may have this already.  If not let me know and I'll send a marked map.
