William Smith b1891/92
« on: Sunday 23 September 18 15:29 BST (UK) »
I have put several posts re William Smith b1892,  but it has come to light via contact with a few Matches on Ancestry DNA there could well be Romany Gypsy connections somewhere along the line.

William is my hubby Grandfather,  we know very little re the Smith side other than his Dad was George,  dont know where born etc but William lived in East Ham, Essex with his wife and children up until he left in 1933.

Because we know very little, but lots have tried to help,  its difficult to say where Hubby connects/links with his DNA Matches.

I believe Romanies did often use Smith as an alternate name,  if anyone can through any light on this it may help.

Many thank

If nothing definitive turned up before, then there is little hope of anything turning up a mere month later.

As you yourself state, you probably have to wait for the 1921 census to come online.

Did ancestry DNA turn up any well known gypsy surnames connected to your William Smith?

If you can name any married couples that are related perhaps you could research in old newspapers?

Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)

British Gypsies can share some common surnames such as Boswell, Loveridge, Lee, Gray or Grey, Holland, Smith, Young, Herron and Hearn.

Have any of these surnames appeared?
