Water-damaged census return SOLVED THANK YOU
« on: Sunday 23 September 18 19:34 BST (UK) »
I am making a list of Samuel Lomases who were adults mid 19th century, to help with a longstanding problem.

I have convinced myself the the attached, part of Manchester water-damaged page (Piece: 2220; Folio: 230; Page: 6) has a Samuel LOMAS as head of the household.

There is a Samuel LOMAS on the same street (Dark Lane) in the 1841 census (HO107/578/Book 3/Page 1).

There are plenty of Samuel Lomases in the 1861 census who might match but more information from the 1851 (eg wife's name) would help.

Please would you take a look at the attached and tell me what you can make out.

I've done a quick adjustment and it does look like Lomas.

I've been playing around with the image and I agree, definitely looks like Lomas.

It's good to know the surname is Lomas.

Can you make out the wife's name or Samuel's occupation?

Even a child's name would help...

I'm trying to work out other bits......

I think he might be 64 and born Ireland.
The second name is odd as it looks like Arby (??)
Fourth name could be Richard

This all very tentative  :-\

FindMyPast has transcibed this household as -

Samuel Lomas   Head   46   Fireman
Doby  ???   Lomas Wife 36   1815
Meatha (Martha) Lomas   Dau   Unm
Elizabeth Lomas   Dau
Tom   Lomas Son 5
E Lomas   Dau

With regard to the wife's name I can see 'oby' but cannot decipher the first letter.

It might be Barman rather than Fireman.

Agree with Elizabeth.
