Looking for Ellen YATES pre 1861
« on: Sunday 23 September 18 21:41 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find Ellen YATES born Hampton, Middlesex circa 1834.

In 1861 she is working as a servant in Hassop, Derbyshire.

By 1871 she has married John ASHTON and is living in Calver, Derbyshire.

Can anyone find her in 1841 of 1851?  At her marriage she says her father is Henry, a gardener.

There's a Henry and Amy Yates/Yeats baptising children in Hampton in the 1830s. Can't find them on 1841 and by 1851 Amy is now Mrs Warren (with Yeats children - but no Ellen)

I've found Henry and Amy in 1841.  They have several children including an unknown son but no Ellen. Their ages - 9, 7, 5, 3 & 3 weeks mean that there isn't really room for another one.

I think she possibly changed her name and that she is the daughter Catherine on 1841 and 1851 census of the exact same age.

Can find no trace of 'Catherine' Yates after 1851.  She was baptised as Catherine 'Yeates' 23/3/1834 Hampton St. Mary.

A big thank you for all the replies.  I spent ages looking for her on FindMyPast, Ancestry, Familysearch, Freereg and the GRO site and I know you must have done too.

I agree that a name change is the most likely answer. I would feel happier if she named her children after family members but Elizabeth is the only one and that's very common.

That's what I was going to suggest if I'd been able to find 1841 to see which of the daughters were there [Ancestry have them as Yater!]

Some of our ancestors didn't much our research easy.

There seems to be PORTSMOUTH, PORTSMITH and PORCHMOUTH families around in the area at that time.  I can't see a birth for Amey though.

I've not familair with research in this area.  My mother would have been surprised at a southern ancestor.
