Mystery re Gartinardress House, nr Crossdoney: 1920-1924
« on: Monday 24 September 18 13:36 BST (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
Now here's a mystery that perhaps someone can unravel for our family...
I have a picture of my uncle Jimmy Young (aged about 8, b. 1916) with his family posing for the photo outside the front of Gartinardress House, near Crossdoney, in 1924.
However, my cousin has drawn my attention to a small entry in a local paper for 1920 (sorry, don't have this at my fingertipes at the moment) that says words to the effect:
"Gartinardress, unoccupied, burned down - about to be occupied by the military..."

I'm not at all certain about the political situation in this part of County Cavan in 1920, or who "the military" referred to.  But is there anyone with a fuller picture and understanding of those times who could please try and solve this mystery of a house in complete ruins, but miraculously restored four years later.
Many thanks,
Keith

Are you sure the photo isn't of a house in Gartinardress, looking at the maps the very large house that was Gartinardress House doesn't appear to have been rebuilt.
What style is the house in the photo?
There is a smaller house near it that did survive.

His father died 1917 so do you think they still lived there after this as it appears to be a 12 roomed house

"Gartinardress, unoccupied, burned down - about to be occupied by the military..."

If it was unoccupied then maybe the house the Youngs were living in at the time??

Hi, Sinann and Hallmark and Dathai,
Have just got back from being out and about since I started this thread with my query earlier today...
First of all, thank you all so much for your diligent attention to my question!  I need to assimilate all the very interesting points and links you make and then speak to my cousin, my Uncle Jimmy's younger daughter, to get a better idea of how to respond to your suggestions.
Will be back in touch on here just as soon as I can,
Many thanks again, Keith
