Hi All,

Hope someone can help, Im trying to locate the archives for local newspapers for Leigh, in the 1960's.

Im looking for family obituaries which might help me locate the whereabouts of family graves.

Hopefully these might be on line ?  ???

https://www.leighjournal.co.uk/announcements/
might be useful.

Otherwise, if you post names and dates we can do some digging.

Hi Philip,

No joy with the website I'm afraid, but I'm guessing it doesn't go back as far as I'm researching:

I'm trying to locate the burials of

William Rowland -Died - 25 August 1958, at Billinge Hospital,  & of 36 Broom Avenue, Leigh
and his wife
Hannah Rowland - Died - 19 February 1962 at 36 Westbourne Avenue, Leigh

& also Amelia Parry - spinster (The above named Hannah's sister)
dod - 20 November 1960 at 36 Westbourne Avenue, Leigh

Any advice on where to research would be much appreciated,

Many thanks
Rowlandson :)

Have you tried Leigh Cemetery.

Wigan Council do searches but they are not cheap

It may be worth an email as you have the death dates in the hope it is cheaper

There's a site called "Wiganworld", which is free to register, and not only has indexes for most of the Wigan area cemeteries, searchable so that you can see who is in the same grave with who... not good phrasing, but you know what I mean - and also there are some people who are fantastically skillful at tracing families over the decades, so they may be helpful.
It's worth a try.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Hi rosie 99 & ThrelfallYorky,

Many thanks for your suggestions :)

Whilst I dont mind paying a fee to locate the whereabouts of their burials, I was hoping that I mind find mention in an obituary, of them actually being buried within a given cemetery rather than doing a complete blanket search of every burial ground within Leigh.

Having had a look on Wiganworld I cant see an index for Leigh Cemetery..... unless of course Im missing something  ??? ???

I went and looked again - not seen it for some time - on the "Wiganworld" cemetery indexes, and though there are loads of Rowland(s), couldn't find yours. There is a site for Leigh cemetery online, as well, but couldn't find any of your names there, either.
A query on the Wiganworld site in "People" might very well bring out very good help and possibly even more information. As I mentioned earlier there are some very knowledgeable and diligent researchers who know a lot about not just Wigan and its families, but also the wider area.
Full obituaries didn't seem to be printed unless people were of local significance a lot. I've noticed that American ones, especially, have huge detail and are very helpful about families, both ancestors and descendants. English ones do tend to be less useful in that respect. I do hope that you find what you are looking for ... perhaps if you find and contact a local paper, they might make a story out of it, and hence find you more information?

Hi Again ThrelfallYorky

I really appreciate you taking the time to look for me.

My initial request was a bit of a long shot, as I was rather hoping that local newspapers for the Leigh area might be on line .... I guess its back to the drawing board  ;D

Many thanks once again for your help

Just to avoid any confusion I think we need to clarify here that this enquirer is looking for a death notice not an obituary. Notices are common, obituaries are few.
