Claremont Street, Greenwich - looking for a building >>
« on: Tuesday 25 September 18 16:52 BST (UK) »
Hi all, new to this area of the world!

I have a record off the 1939 register, but I cannot for the life of me make out what it says. I don't need a look-up though, so I'm not sure if someone with local knowledge of the area could tell me if they know the place?

The last legible address is 55 Claremont Street.
The next entry is 9, then the best I can make out is Feusais House???? Google doesn't auto-suggest anything. I can't see it on the 1911 census after 55 Claremont Street either. My relatives are in number 14 of this building.

Any idea? Looking at google maps, the street has been re-developed. Thanks in advance

If you check the 1939 register for the name of the occupant of number 9 it should give you the name.

Googling the name returns a building near Claremont Street on google maps.

Here's an old map of Claremont Street

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=19&lat=51.4801&lon=-0.0152&layers=168&b=1

Maybe the Houses are in the block of four which appear to be in the back gardens
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

I think it must be Temair House https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/537988/177473/13/101329

The entries before that are for Haddo House, which is just to the north.

Temair House is what you get if you check the residents of No. 9 on the 1939 register

I was about to post this map  https://maps.nls.uk/view/103032300

Temair House still very much there. http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mrv/ I should imagine that the flats, if they have been refurbished, are pretty pricey.

With regard to your earlier post , which disappeared , at 20 Temair House in the 1939 London Electoral Register  are William John Hughes and Dorothy Doris Hughes.

Not sure if this will help  ;D

Interesting looking place. I didn't think flats like that were built before the war. Thanks again
