Kanawha Co. VA
« on: Wednesday 26 September 18 15:56 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm tracing my wife's maternal geneaology.
I'm having trouble finding the parents of Mary Ann Browder born Mary Ann Duncan about 1807 in virginia. She married Thomas Browder Feb. 28 1822. Marriage is listed
Virginia marriages: Thomas Browder and Mary Ann Duncan - 28 February 1822 - Kanawha Virginia.
Thanks you so much

Sometimes people post questions when they start researching, and sometimes after having done a lot of digging. Forgive me if you have already looked at the following with no success:

There is a William Dunken in the county in 1820 and 1830, with a daughter to match Mary Ann in 1820. What do you know about William?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHLY-ZRG

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH54-8YB

--------
There are 4 other Duncans marrying in Kanawha co, Virginia from 1819 to 1834. What do you know about them?

https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Aduncan~%20%2Bmarriage_place%3A%22Kanawha%20co%2C%20west%20virginia%22~%20%2Bmarriage_year%3A1800-1840~%20%2Bresidence_place%3A%22Kanawha%20co%2C%20west%20virginia%22~&https://www.familysearch.org/search/hr/search/=undefined

--------
In 1840 Thomas Browder had an older woman in the household. Was it his mother or Mary Ann's?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHT2-3Y2

--------
Did Mary Ann live until the 1880 Census? (I haven't found them in Kanawha County after 1860). If so, her parents' birthplaces might help.

-----
By the way, if you don't have it yet, I would take this as them in 1850, even though it says "Nancy A" and not "Mary A". The younger children's names are a close enough match to 1860. Comparing the neigboring families sometimes helps to be sure.

After all that searching at familysearch I ended up Googling "Thomas Browder, Kanawha co, west virginia"

This is the best hit:
https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/hazlett/838/

He has done a lot of work on the family and seems to have Mary Ann's parents. Then again, maybe it's your site. :)

Hi,

Not sure if this will help you - or you are able to discount any of the information but will post for you to see. There is an anc tree which gives some vague information - not a lot of sources  ???

Mary Ann Duncan -  17 October 1804 -Pt Pleasant, Virginia - with parents  William Duncan about 1772 - Buckingham Co., VA passed away 1850 -  Mason County, West Virginia.
Mother - Priscilla Rachel Murphy 1783–1871 -  born about 1783 - Virginia passed away about 1871 - Mason, West Virginia.

One source shown is - 1850 census showing  Priscilla Duncan - District 38, Mason, Virginia. Born 1770 (presumably this is why it says her husband William Duncan  passed away 1850  ??? A bit vague - no source.

John Fout - Age 28 - Deletha Fout - Age 21
John W Fout - Age 5 - Charles N Fout - Age 0
Priscilla Duncan - Age 80

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8D8-YNT

Next source shows a 1870 census - Priscilla Duncan - Clendenin, Mason, West Virginia born about 1774 - aged 96 years -

On the 1870 census it shows Priscilla Duncan living with Peter Duncan - that may be a brother to Mary Ann Duncan. Priscilla was not with him on the 1860 census.

Similar information from the man who had good information that I posted earlier, but I think this link has more recent information. And a email address for the researcher.

-------
This might help, I didn't download the ebook, but it is free

https://books.google.com/books/about/History_of_Kanawha_County.html?id=NNRl3XcwYzkC

--------
This might help, but it might be too recent. It should be online somewhere, since it was printed in 1911 and therefore out of copyright

History of Charleston and Kanawha County, West Virginia and Representative Citizens, by W.S. Laidley, 1911

---------
from a tree at myheritage.com, no sources provided.

said to be Mary Ann's father:

William Duncan
1770 - 1840
Birth:   Between 1770 and 1780
  Buckingham, Buckingham, Virginia, United States
Marriage:   Marriage to: Priscilla Duncan
Circa 1794
  Virginia
Residence:   Mason, Virginia, United States
1840
Death:   After 1840
Kanawha or Mason County, WV, USA

said to be William's father:
Jacob Duncan
1750 - 1926
Birth:   1750
  Buckingham, Virginia, USA
Death:   Jan 22 1926
  Buckingham, Virginia, USA

nothing useful for Mary Ann's mother, Priscilla (possibly Murphy) Duncan, except a date of birth 1774, Virginia

Priscilla Murphy parents were given as John Murphy 1760 - 1817 and Sarah Bryant  - 1764 - Probably  ??? Richmond, VA - passed 1817 (even more vague and no sources)

Although I did see an entry in Virginia Marriages for Sarah Bryan - Spouse John Murphy - Marriage Date - 7 Jun 1782 - Marriage Location - Henrico County, Virginia.
