Cant find birth certificate
« on: Thursday 27 September 18 14:10 BST (UK) »
I have my DIL's grans, adoption certificate.  It confirmed her birth date of 27/2/1940 which we knew. She was formally adopted 20 June 1941 in Weymouth. The adoption certificate has her christian name as Barbara but no surname. I have tried to find her birth but obliviously without even a mothers surname Im going nowhere. Is there a site other than the GRO that I can search using specific birth date.

Hi Mandie Oliver

WELCOME to Rootschat

As Rootchat do not allow public posting of living persons details then you woulld have to use the PM (personal message) system.

Post a couple more times ( Just say Thanks Nanny Jan /Ray ) and the PM system will open up for you so that you can talk direct to anyone who wishes to contact you to help.

Good Luck

Do you know where she was born?

Back in the 1940's they often had children adopted away from their county of birth,so the mother would have no chance of bumping into them in the street.

Do her adoption records tell you anything about her mum?
Presumably gran was born illegitimately, and therefore her surname will be assumed to be the same as her mother.

Do you know where / when she died? Just wondering if the death certificate has anything useful.

It would depend on how well the informant knew her details.

The law changed in 2015 so your daughter-in-law can apply as a "person with a prescribed relationship" for her adoption records.

http://www.adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk/news/newsitems/newaccess.htm

see the link nanny jan posted

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records

Her adoptive parents most probably did what most new parents do and gave her a name of their choice, she may not have kept the first names she was 1st registered with.

If you are looking for a better copy of her adoption certificate showing her name and adoptive parents after adoption then you need to find her entry in the GRO adopted childrens index (not the birth index) which is not online.

Unless your DIL gets access to the file, you may never know what her birth name was and there is no way of linking adopted children to entries in the birth index unless you know both names.
