Australian Imperial Force Enlistment
« on: Thursday 27 September 18 17:34 BST (UK) »
Can anyone explain what would happen after a person has enlisted? In this case in the AIF in the Great War. Did the recruit immediately join other recruits or did they have to report somewhere on a later date?

Much would depend on the timing.  If there was a large number of volunteers and a new battalion was being raised, or if a battalion was back home for strengthening, a recruit might be sent off for training immediately.  It is probable that recruits who signed on were sent home then later given orders to report to a certain place on a certain date once there were enough to form into a unit to all begin basic training at the same time.

My great great uncle enlisted in the AIF at the People's Palace in Sydney on 17th Aug 1914 and his attestation papers show that he took the oath 5 days later. A month later his commanding officer appointed him to his unit (ASC) and the Embarkation Roll shows that he left Australia onboard a transport ship in Oct that year for Gallipoli. Seems likely that he did some training during that time with the rest of his unit although he had been in the British Army before and the war was well under way by then. As Phillip says prob depends when the recruit enlisted
Kindelan/Kindlen- Cavan & Dundee & USA & Australia
Glancy/Glancey/Clancy - Leitrim & Dundee
Ross - Dundee & Glasgow & Aberdeen
Clark/Deuchars - Angus & Mains & Dundee
Grewar/Gruar - Mains & Australia

Thanks everyone. I have his AIF service records. This man was a seaman he enlisted on 24 Aug 1915 but wasn't discharged from his ship until the next day, 25 Aug 1915. He must have returned to the ship after enlisting and arranged to be discharged. He must have had to report to the army at a later date.
