Elizabeth Sawyer 1871 Census
« on: Friday 28 September 18 06:40 BST (UK) »
Seeking help to find Elizabeth Sawyer, nee Oakes, in the 1871 census.

She was born in 1805 at Trentham, Stafford, parents James Oakes and Charlotte Penson, as per England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

In 1823 she married James Sawyer in Stoke upon Trent, Stafford as per England Marriages, 1538–1973

I have her in 1841, with James, at Burslem, Staffs, with James and 6 children.

In 1851, she and James are at Village of Sneyd Green, Abbey Hulton, Stafford with 4 children and 1 Grand child

In 1861 she and James are at 71 Well Street, Stoke on Trent, Staffs, with one son.

In 1881 she and James are at 170 Sutherland Road, Stoke on Trent with 3 grand children

In 1871, I have James at 1 Nestfeild Street, Darlington, Durham with his daughter, her husband Robert Stewart, their daughter, and a grand daughter.

I have not been able to locate Elizabeth, using Ancestry or Family Search, and at this time, am at a loss as how to find her.

Any assistance would be very gratefully accepted.

normamac: The Elizabeth i am trying to find had the following children:

Charlotte, born 1824, Stafford
Isabella, born 1826, Stafford
Joseph, born 1831, Stafford
Ann, also born 1831. Twins? cannot find baptism records at this stage
David, born 1834, Stafford
Mary, born 1838, Stafford
Mary, born 1841, Stafford
James, born 1841. Again twins? Again, cannot find baptism records.

I have not found a Hewitt in the family at all, so the one you have found, unfortunately  is not the one I am looking for.

This family is quite difficult to sort out, with some staying in Stafford, and others moving around.

Many thanks for your interest.

Just a thought but do you know what she passed away from?

Wondering if she was poorly for a time and receiving care somewhere outside the home  :-\

Appreciate she is alive and well in 1881 but if James was living with his daughter in 1871 and Elizabeth is missing could make sense.

Does she have a daughter named Jane born 1835 married to James Hewitt?

According to FamilySearch, Jane's marriage on 15 Jun 1856 in Burslem names her father as John, so unfortunately this isn't the right Elizabeth.

Probably just me but I can't find an Elizabeth and James Sawyer on any census - only an Elizabeth and John  :-[

Going to try again....

Ok found it straight away then goodness knows what I was doing before!

Thank you both for your input.

As I said, this family is quite difficult to deal with. At this stage, I have not been able to find Elizabeth's death information.

It is possible she was out of home, but one would think even a hospital would have filled in a census form. I do know that workhouses and institutions did from others in the trees.

I will have another go at trying to find her death information, using a couple of sources.

I might be completely wrong! but doesn't it say on the 1851, 1861 and 1881 census that Elizabeth was born in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicester?

Also, looking at FreeReg, I see a baptism for Isabella in 1826 (and her marriage to Robert STEWART in 1848), however her mother is noted as "Elizabeth daughter of James Bucknall of Shelton, Isabella is their 2nd child."

Did Elizabeth OAKES die, and James remarried another Elizabeth? Or is the original marriage record incorrect, and she wasn't a spinster? Or is the marriage of James And Elizabeth OAKES not the correct one? I'm a bit confused, as you say - a difficult family ???

maddys52, thank you for your interest. This family has what little hair I have falling out.

The 1841 census has Elizabeth born in county.

For Charlottes baptism, parents are James Sawyer and Elizabeth, no maiden name

Isabella's baptism has James Sawyer and Elizabeth Buchnall/Birchnall. Some transcriptions are Bucknall, others Birchnall

David's baptism has James Sawyer and Elizabeth Oakes.

So far  have not found the birth or baptism records for the other five children, who appear on the census's

I have a copy of the marriage register, and the FreeBDM agrees with the register.

I can find several baptisms for Elizabeth Oakes in Stafford, but none in Leicester.

Very confusing, with much more sorting out to be done.
