Newspaper lookup, Youngstown, Ohio, 1890 - 1892
« on: Friday 28 September 18 17:55 BST (UK) »
Could someone please look in the Youngstown, Ohio, newspapers between February 1, 1890, and September 1892 for a mention of Henry "Harry" Billups of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania? Or of James or Amelia Acor, also of Pittsburgh? Or if searchable, the suspicious/violent death of an unidentified man in Youngstown in that time period?

Henry Billups was my great grandfather. He is last known to be alive in February 1890, when Mr Acor accused him of alienating the affections of Mrs Acor while all were in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Dispatch of February 1, 1890, carried an article saying that Mr Acor had located Henry Billups in Youngstown and Henry denied knowing the whereabouts of Mrs Acor.

A note passed down in our family says that Henry died at age 46. He would have turned 47 in September 1892. All the other ages at death mentioned in that note have proven accurate.

I have seen the Pittsburgh Dispatch articles of January and February 1890 already.

I didn't find Henry Billups in
- The extant death records of Allegheny Co, Pa (Pittsburgh)
- The burial records of Homestead Cemetery, Pittsburgh (where his daughter is buried.
- The burial records of St John's Episcopal Church (his daughter's place of marriage)

He may be in the Youngstown death records, if there are any available. I didn't find them.

Amelia Aker is on the 1900 census of Pittsburgh, listed as a widow and living in the Pittsburgh and Allegheny Home for the Friendless. I think I found her husband James on that census also, but I don't have him in my notes.

Thank you,
Ed H

Pittsburgh Daily Post - 20 March 1895 - page 4 -

Divorce was granted to Amelia Alice Acor from James Acor.  Testimony related to a horrible story of the life of an unhappily married couple.
Married 23 January 1873 and lived a miserable existence until July 19 1893.
When married the libellant  lived on South Diamond Street but at the time of the suit was entered she lived with her children in the rear of 25 Goodrich Street Allegheny.
The last heard of Acor was when he worked in the workhouse in September 1893. Several witness corroborated Mrs Acor's testimony.

Thank you. It has been a while since I actively researched him. Either I missed that site or it is new. At one time, I think you had to apply in person either in Youngstown (Mahoning Co) or in the capital, Columbus, OH, to get a lookup of a death before a certain year, maybe 1906?, I don't remember.

Thank you, I didn't know the Acors had divorced. I thought maybe James had just deserted Amelia.
I guess Henry Billups' death is going to remain a mystery. It was one of the few family stories that proved entirely false. We were told as children that both Henry and Agnes had died in a carriage accident together. But Agnes died in 1879 of breast cancer and I have a number of records of Henry after that, just no death. Which makes me think he died in a way no one wanted the children, or grandchildren, to know about.

The Pittsburgh Press - 30 September 1893

Applications for divorce.

Alice Amelia Acor charges her husband James Acor with cruelty.

Thank you very much.

billups site:news.google.com/newspapers location:Ohio
returned no results

Google is weird. I misspelled the surname deliberately and did:
Billiups site:news.google.com/newspapers location:Ohio

it returned the comment "Including results for billups site:news.google.com/newspapers location:Ohio" followed by 4 results, all of which were spelled Billups. But still not my man.
