JAMES STOCKWELL apprenticed middlesex 1717
« on: Sunday 30 September 18 05:15 BST (UK) »
Any further info on the above man, please.

I have seen online his apprenticeship to Mr. Gascoigne, glazier, but cannot find a birth or other record for him.l

I note his father is listed as James Stockwell, weaver, 'late of...' (an address given), and the cost of the apprenticeship is on the bottom as 'nothing'. Does this indicate his father had died?

Thanks, Bea.

Could this baptism have occurred when he was a little older, there were 3 James Stockwell marriages between 1701 & 1712.

The record states the father was deceased:

This Indenture witnesseth, That James Stockwell
son of James Stockwell late of Rosemarylane in Whitechappel
parish in ye County of Midd(lese)x Weaver deceased
doth put himself Apprentice to Joseph Gascoyne Citizen and
Glasier of London ...

thanks for this reply,

Now I look again, I can see the record says James Snr. is deceased, I cold not read it before.
I don't  know about the age at baptism, but the James Stockwell, weaver,  I had seen and believe he was the father of James, the apprenticed glazier.

Is the document issued at the end of the apprenticeship period, or a record of the beginning?

I have been looking to confirm the father of Daniel Stockwell, born 1713 at Holborn, parents given as James and Mary, thus the investigation of the 2 James'.

There is a marr. recorded between a James Stockwell and Mary Medway, it's easy to accept the record because it fits, but I think there's more going on than I can find.

I am grateful for the help,

Bea.

The date showing in the body of the document (25 April 1717) is when the indentures were exchanged, marking the beginning of the apprenticeship. Apprenticeships should have been enrolled at Guildhall within 12 months of that binding date.
