Victoria Hotel?
« on: Sunday 30 September 18 19:10 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where the Victoria Hotel was located in Pontypridd? My great grandfather was the publican there in 1911. I spoke to the publican at the Victoria Inn on the High Street, but he said that the pub used to be a club and was never a hotel. I wonder if the Victoria Hotel was demolished. Many thanks for any help.

Have you looked at the enumerators list for the 1911, it gives the name of the street against the Queens Hotel
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Thank you for the replies. I looked up Duffryn Street on Google Maps and it is in a place called Ferndale. Would Ferndale be written as Pontypridd on the census? Ferndale is approx. 9 miles from Pontypridd.

The other thread was of great help aswell.

Rosie99, I don't have the enumerators list for 1911, and was curious to know why you mentioned the Queens Hotel?

Looks like it was on the Pontypridd High St. The previous household on the census is  the Criterion Hotel - see https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/300013524-the-criterion-public-house-pontypridd#.W7EpgRTTVTY for some info

Also a dispute with the neighbour - so definitely HIgh St in the town, not up in Ferndale

Thank you Mabel. That's great info. I actually took a photo of the Criterion today. The paper article is a great find. My great grandfather was Edwin L. Hinckley, and the publican of Victoria Hotel.

My great great grandfather William C. Hinckley was the publican of the Queen's Hotel on Bridge Street, which unfortunately was demolished back in the 1970's. William also died in the Victoria Hotel in 1937.

Is it possible to work out which side of the Criterion the Victoria Hotel was?

According to this http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Llantrisant/Pubs
It was 7 High Street, which is now Centrica Recruitment,

The Criterion was number 11

So it's town side  (away from the train station)

Thank you iolaus. That has confirmed the location of the Victoria Hotel. Just need to find some old photographs, the museum in Pontypridd was shut on Sunday, so will have to visit there again some day.

Thanks again to all for your help.
