I find the simplest way is to start with censuses so I can tick off the names to say "alive in (year)" or "died after (year)".  For example:

1841 census HO107 197/10 p15 Pool Hall, Hartington
James 35, tailor
Mary 23
Jane 8, John 7, Sarah 5, Mary 3, Maria 1
all born in county

1861 census fo 26, piece 2523, page 13, Village, Hartington
James 56, draper and grocer
Mary 43
John 26, Mary 23, Harriet Emily 15, Clara Esther 11, Emily Louisa 9, George 7, James Henry 3
all born Hartington

The "alive in" idea narrows down the search for marriages or deaths.

This gives us:
John b1835 - alive (single) in 1861
Mary b1838 alive (single) in 1861
and so on

Philip

Philip's contribution is excellent..and I can add detail to it..directly from the Hartington Parish Records 1610-1910......Bearing in mind that PR's record Baptisms (not Births).Marriages,,and Burials not Deaths..so there is often no way of knowing an accurate BIRTH Date.....unless an age of Death is given on Burial Records ...
JAMES HOPE baptised 14.04.1805 was on of SEVEN children of THOMAS HOPE a farmer and his wife JANE..neither of whom were from Hartington and were no married there......the other children of Thomas and Jane:
Hannah 21.01.1800.(buried 06.01.1801).....Mary 07.12 1801....Elizabeth 10.10.1803...JAMES 1805....John 18.03,1810..George 22.06.1812 (Buried 4 days later!)...Ann. 09.05.1814

JAMES HOPE married MARY FOGG 25.06.1832..and had the following children:
Jane Anne 12.08.1832....John 27.04.1834....Sarah Ann 10.04.1836...Mary 24.03.1838...Elizabeth Ellen 09.01.1842....Thomas 30.04.1843 (All these show father's occupation as Tailor..the following show Father's occupation as Mercer/Grocer..did James change Trades or is this a different family?? Census records will tell....)
Harriet Emily 04.01.1846...Lucy 14.11.1847.....Clara Esther 20.11.1849...Louise 03.04.1852...george 24.12.1853....James Henry 28.10.1857 (Father's occupation Draper and tailor..make of that what you will!)

James Hope was buried at Hartington 11.12.1877 aged 72...His father Thomas was buried Hartington 20.08.1818 age 50....his mother Jane was buried 26.08.1815 aged 43....
MARY FOGG his wife was baptised 22.07.1818 and was buried 11.05.1865 aged 46....

These were the earliest HOPES at Hartington..though there were a WILLIAM and Elizabeth and family...and the erstwhile Vicar of Hartington was Benjamin Hope who married Rhoda Fogg..they are both buried at Hartington.

I have a few Marriages and burials....but I am now very tired and going to bed!!
Good luck
Derek.

Wow, very useful and interesting. Thank you Derek and Philip. All of use to the history group.

I need to go on a hunt in the churchyard and check inside for info on the walls, etc.

Thanks Donna

Hello Donna..here are the HOPE Burials at Hartington. You will almost certainly find Benjamin and Rhoda because he was the Vicar...
Buried:-
Benjamin 02.01.1815 aged 51 wife of William below (nee Bassett)
Rhoda his wife 16.04.1829 aged71
Elizabeth 22.01.1869 aged 81
George 26.06.1812 infant son of Thomas and Jane
Hannah 06.01.1801 infant daughter of Thomas and Jane
JAMES 11.12.1877 aged 72
Jane wife of Thomas mother of James 26.08.1815 aged 43
Mary 11.05.1865 aged 46
Thomas husband of Jane father of James 20.08.1818 aged 50
Thomas 18.03.1862 aged 37..son of William and Elizabeth nee Bassett
William 09.05.1866 aged 69..husband of Elizabeth nee Bassett

William and Elizabeth had six other children..two who died in infancy

MARRIAGES at Hartington:
Elizabeth Ellen  married Frank Evans Jones 12.03.1866
Harriet Emily m James Whitacker 24.06.1874
John henry m Eva gertrude Lomas 11.04.1907
Maria Fogg Hope married Joseph Carter 14.04.1867
Sarah . Thomas haworth 06.01.1859
William Hope married Elizabeth Bassett 11.01.1819 (seven children..the eldest Ann born only two months after the marriage!! Naughty peeps!!)
Sarah married Edmond hopper 10.09.1876
Sarah married Richard massey 10.07.1826
Benjamin (Reverend) married Rhoda Fogg 04.06.1798

The FOGGS seem to have been one of the biggest Hartingtom families.....

I was wrong to suggest this lot were the earliest HOPES in Hartington. The earliest records from about 1610 are fragmentary and unreadable..but there id the odd nugget..including two Marriages:

GUILIEMI HOPE (William) married Martha Challenor 10.05. 1705...probaby the son of PETRUS (Peter) HOPE who married MARIA BUXTON 22.09.1653 and had a son PETRI 27.12.1660..Maaria Buxton was baptised Hartington 21.12.1636.daughter of Guiliemi and Maria (from Heathcote0
