Hi,

By searching via Service number 7819, John Smith's Service record is available on FindMyPast. You may be able to access this free of charge at your local library.

He attested on 3 Dec 1901 but was discharged for making a false answer on attestation.

Father - John Smith, 106 Perth Road, Dundee.

I would suggest the service record is not for your John - there were 2/3 others of this name born in Peterhead around the same time, one of whom was son of a John.

As given already this John Smith attested 3/12/1901 and was discharged 31/1/1902 so only 6 weeks service.   He enlisted in Dundee, occupation Labourer and father was a John in Dundee (address already given).

Your John Smith was already a Blacksmith at this time and still ensconced in Peterhead which was still his address when he married in 1904.   I really don't think he'd have travelled 100 miles to enlist in Dundee describing himself as a labourer, son of a John.

I have now found a service record for your John Smith - he enlisted at Aberdeen on 2/9/1915, aged 37 (so comes up with birth year of 1878 rather than 1879) of 68 Barclay Street, Stonehaven, Kincardine, occupation Shoeing Smith - Regiment: Army Service Corps - service no. 8583.   Wife shown as Agnes Robertson married 8/12/1904 and a son William Hardy Smith b.29/3/1908 Longside, Aberdeenshire.

He was discharged 18/2/1919 - cause of discharge 'wound to finger'.

I found the above on FindMyPast - Ancestry only seem to have some discharge papers.

Thanks so much this opens up a whole new area for me as didn’t know much about this man

He is buried in Peterhead with his own family but it looks as if he had at least one son so could well be family out there somewhere

I appreciate your help

His record that Annette points to shows he served as a shoeing smith (a grade below a  farrier) in the Remount Service of the ASC.   Info here:
https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/the-army-service-corps-in-the-first-world-war/the-army-service-corps-remounts-service/

He was at Swaythling for a very short time before going to France in March 1916.  It looks as if he was at the Base Depot at Peuplingues near Calais as his one minor misdemeanour was there and 10 Canadian General Hospital where his finger injury was looked at was in Calais and admitted him direct rather than going through an evacuation chain.
