Did you get the death certificate for John Smith to see who registered the death and was there any mention of his wife ?

Since William Hardy Smith is the only child in 1915 when John enlisted (having been married 11 years) and bearing in mind the illegitimate Hardy birth of same birthdate that has been found one can't help wondering whether they simply adopted William Hardy because they don't appear to have had any children of their own.  It doesn't necessarily follow that John Smith was his natural father.

Just found them on next census - William shown as William Hardie, lodger.

 I checked for  death for Agnes Robertson /Smith and got the reference number the year of death the age the  district then just put Agnes in and matched the reference numbers ..You will need to order the death certificate to see who registered her death ..The marriage certificate can be viewed .I did not download that certificate ..Looks like her second husband died 1957
