Newbie looking for advice
« on: Monday 01 October 18 21:54 BST (UK) »
Hi all, just found this site and hoping I can get some help.
I have recently returned to Ancestry.co.uk to carry on my family research after a break, and I have hit a bit of a brick wall trying to get back beyond my maternal grandfather.
I have just found his birth certificate which gave me his parents names but that's where it seems to stop. He was born in Newcastle (upon Tyne, Northumberland), I have date of birth, mother and fathers names, an adress in Newcastle at time of birth, siblings forenames and some RAF service detail.

Can anyone advise how to best progress my research into this - I didn't want to post in the county forum until I understand what exactly people may be able to search for me.

Thanks in advance

A very warm welcome to Rootschat. There are some real experts on here who give their advice and help freely.

To get things started it would be helpful if you could let us have all the information you have found so far e.g. names, dates of birth and so on.

Good luck with your research.

Ok thanks Dorrie so....
My maternal grandfather is Joseph Henry FINNEY born 12/02/1902 in Newcastle. His birth certificate gives his father as William, a "cartman" and his mother as Catherine, nee HAUGHTON, and their address as 34 Diana Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. He died in September 1976 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, at the age of 74.

I am told by his only surviving child my Auntie Joan, that he had a brother George and a sister Rose, and that he joined the RAF in 1919 his service number being 333053 (I have looked on the Forces site and this is correct but there seems to be very little information on that site?)

Hi and welcome to rootschat  ;D

Depends on the date will depend on what is available to look for. You say you have his birth cert, so potentially you could look for a baptism and if pre 1911 you could look for the family in the census.

As long as you do not mention names of living people, so as long as he is no longer alive you can put his name/ birth date and it will help others

Add... you already did it as a posted...that will help

iluleah I saw this on Ancestry but didn't really understand it - do you think these are his parents? Why the odd spelling? Is it Latin?

Yes Latin... and the birth date is correct

Catholic church records were written in Latin.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
