looking for Private John Buchanan

recently discovered another of my relatives served during ww1!
this is what I know his name is John Buchanan and he married Maggie Findlay on 28th December 1913 in Irvine Ayrshire Scotland.
I havent managed to confirm his birth yet , but his wife Maggie was born in 1895 in Irvine
and on one of his children death certificates its states that he was a Private in the 3rd Battalion Number 3457, of what I have no idea !
he did return from the war as he had children up to 1927 , havent managed yet to find a confirmed death certificate !
any help would be greatly appreciated .

Was this during the war?
The 3rd. Batt. of a Regt. was usually a Training Reserve & as there is no medal card for him suggests he didn't serve overseas.

their first child was born 1914
second born 1915, he died at 5 months
third child born 1917
do you have any idea what regiment he would be in ?

Without a service record there's no way of knowing I'm afraid.
It may mention it on his marriage cert. or the births of one of his children. Alternatively he may be on the Absent Voter's list if you know where they were living in 1918/19.
It seems odd that no Regt. is mentioned on the cert. I take it there's not an abbreviated Regt. such as HLI or A & SH or similar.

this is all it says on the death certificates of his children
"Private in the 3rd Battalion No 3457"
I cannot find any absent voters lists for scotland online !
I do not live in the uk so cant even get to a library !

There is a medal card for a John Buchanan private in HLI (HIghland Light Infantry) with two regimental numbers 3457 and 241129
