DNA thought of the day
« on: Thursday 04 October 18 11:38 BST (UK) »
Why do we call it DNA testing when it's DNA analysis? We are not having our DNA tested, we are having it analysed.

And why do we say "who did you test with?" , rather than "who were you analysed by?".

I'll try and not have any more thoughts today.

Semantically yours, Martin

Actual, it's like a blood test -  you give a sample. it is sent for analysis and you then get the results back.

Gadget,
Coincidentally, I am currently on 48 hours of no alcohol, prior to a blood ANALYSIS tomorrow.

Luckily I don't drink mid-week.  (Off topic, in the pub a few days ago we were discussing the old Tony Hancock 'Blood Donor' sketch.  Sadly with all this silly political correctness, I doubt any radio station would play it these days.)

Martin, One definition of 'test' is -

An examination of part of the body or a body fluid for medical purposes, especially by means of a chemical or mechanical procedure rather than simple inspection.

I worked in the wonderful (?) NHS from 18 until 60 as a nurse, and we never called it anything other than test/testing.

Is it called DNA for Do-Not-Analyse too much too soon...?
Best test first!
Ah, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet...

Too many thoughts of the day, methinks..

'Test' is easier to spell. And cheaper to print.
