Would a soldier have same service number?
« on: Thursday 04 October 18 15:57 BST (UK) »
Hi. I have recently found a militia attestation paper of my great grandfather, Thomas Green. He joined the 3rd battalion east lancs regiment in 1901, service number is 1358. On the form, highlighted in red pen it states that he joined the Scottish Rifles in May 1902. Would his service number remain the same as I can't find any more information about him? Many thanks

Service numbers did change if he transferred regts.  Before WW1 service numbers were regimentally managed.

The 3rd Bn was only in existence from 1900-2 as it was raised for the Boer war.  The 3rd Bn title came back into use in 1908 with the Army reorganisation.

Thank you alan o. Where do you suggest to look now? With a name like Green, it's difficult, especially if the first name is just by initial.

As the Scottish Rifles were the 2nd Battalion The Cameronians you could see where that battalion was and see if they have him in any records.
