George (Pople) VINCENT, born 1838, Yeovil
« on: Friday 05 October 18 14:35 BST (UK) »
Hello,

George (Pople) VINCENT was born in the 3rd quarter 1838 (baptised 08/12/1838 St. John Yeovil), the son of John VINCENT, a Glove Cutter, and his wife Rose (nee POPLE).   She died 1st quarter 1848.   After a 4 year spell in Parkhurst Prison, discharged 20/03/1858, I can find no further trace of him, except very tenuously he may have married Emily JAMES on 10/09/1867 in Bedminster.

Can anyone help trace him after 1858 please.

Thank you,

BAC3

Emily James was a widow when she married George Vincent, dau. of a James Beer.

George's occupation is Mariner, his father John Vincent, Plumber. and James Beer was a Mariner too.

However, a) I can only find transcription of marriage details - not the original page - so have no idea if 'Plumber' is correct or mistranscribed, b) can certainly find no John Vincent who was a plumber anyway on the census.

If said George was indeed a mariner when he married, as his wife was a widow in 1871 he may well have died at sea.

Good Morning Annette,

Thank you for the information.   I am extremely grateful, especially for the "lead" about the possibility of his death at sea.   Indeed, on 29/10/1869 a George VINCENT, aged 30, an ordinary seaman aboard the Hull, drowned in the North Sea.   Those are the basic details, but balance of probabilities says the "right person", and I now need to confirm the place of birth.

Emil JAMES being a widow (nee BEER) very neatly ties up the complete profile for George VINCENT.

Again, thank you.

And, Ciderdrinker, thank you  for setting me on the right path.
