2 marriages for the same couple
« on: Saturday 06 October 18 16:23 BST (UK) »
My g g grandfather James Cripps was serving in Meerut, India when he married my g g grandmother Sarah Jane O'Toole/Toole. I have two different dates for their marriage.

1 - 9 Feb 1871

2 - 4 May 1872 This one also matches the date given on their daughter (Florence Eliza Cripps's) birth certificate.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to why there would be two records? And which may be the correct one.

Thanks

I looks like a mixed marriage. The 1871 is the correct marriage date  in the Church of St. John, the second appears to confirmation in the Catholic Church of the 1871 marriage.

There is a second record
Solemnized in the Catholic Church of Meerat from 1st January to 31st March 1872
Note in first column reads
24th(I think) March
? These persons were married by the protestant? minister on 9th Feby 1871.
To ? ? renewed missing? content in my presence.
A bit hard to read

4 May 1872 This one also matches the date given on their daughter (Florence Eliza Cripps's) birth certificate.

Per the baptism register of the Roman Catholic church at Meerut, Florence Eliza Cripps was born on 26 May 1872 and baptised on 6th June.

As others have reported, the other "marriage" date is actually 4 (possibly 24th?) March 1872 when James and Sarah renewed their marriage consent at the catholic church in Meerut, having been married by a protestant minister in 1871.

Right, that all makes sense. Thank you so much for the help. I will check out the images on findmypast as well.
