Abigail Warner, Mistley Essex circa 1730s - 1740s Completely Stuck!
« on: Sunday 07 October 18 11:12 BST (UK) »
I have had a couple of threads on her family after she married James Palmer, a Customs Boatman, on 20 October 1760 at St Mary, Mistley but I am totally stuck on who she actually was!

I cannot find her baptism - or any possibilities for - or her death.  She was having children with James until 1789 but after that - nothing...James Palmer died in 1797 in Mistley.

The only thing I seem to have been able to ascertain at least on the face of her marriage record is that she was 'single' at the time of marriage as was James so I am 99% sure she was not married before and Warner was her maiden name.

Any suggestions very welcome!!  The Palmers lived around Bradfield/Mistley/Manningtree area

Thanks
Ruth

Have you seen the name "Warner" written down?  Perhaps it has been mistaken for a similar surname  :-\

It may help Rootschatters (or it may not!) in the search - FreeReg names the marriage witnesses as James LEECH and Richard FRANCIS.  No indication as to whether or not the bride and groom were of the parish, only that the marriage was by banns.

(ADDED)
WARNER baptisms in Mistley (fuzzysearch on FreeReg):
1697-1708 - 6 (5 to William & Abigail - including Abigail 1702)
1737 - 2
1745 - 1
1759 - 1
So - there is a potential WARNER dynasty with Abigail as a name passed down at least one generation - but if this was continued by sons of William and Abigail it would have to be through Jonathan (bap 1700), William (bap 1700) or Samuel (bap 1709) - but where?

Thank you both

No - I've not seen Warner written down - I'm only working off transcripts.  I will have to see if it is on Seax.

James Leech (Leach) the witness is James Palmer's brother in law as far as I can ascertain (married to James's sister Mary).  I have no known connections with the Francis witness that I can find.

 :)

*edited have checked Seax - I am fairly sure its Warner  - at worst it could be Walker - but she signs with an 'x'

It is definately written as Warner
There are baptisms to Warners in the time frame
There was also An Abigail Warner baptised in 1702, her mother was also Abigail, so there is a naming tradition.

Where/what villages did the children live in? After James died, did she go to live with them and her death recorded in another village.

I took a look at the registers of Mistley, there are 3 Warner families having children at the same time as James and Abigail Palmer.
John and Elizabeth Warner
John and Hannah Warner
William and Gertrude Warner

There is also a Rose wife of George Warner who dies 1777 and George dies 1797 also possible candidates.
Could they be brothers or cousins of Abigail. Following a male line is often easier.

I also noticed that even though James and Abigail married 1760 the first child at Mistley is Jonathan 1765, there is also a 4 year gap between 1771-1775, as James was with the Customs office he could be at Colchester or Harwich during that time and his family with him.
Correct me if I missed anyone.
