Will of Tobias Gyles
« on: Monday 08 October 18 10:22 BST (UK) »
I am having extreme difficulty reading the will of Tobias Gyles. Can anyone please help - it is not very long (19 lines plus another 7 for the probate part). Tobias lived in Alfriston in Sussex.

Brilliant stuff, Philip. The will transcript in ANC gives a probate date of 24 April 1616 and I have found an FindMyPast burial record for Tobias of 29 January 1616. Given that Tobias was "sicke in body" when he made this will could the date of the will be 1615 rather than 1515? I do note that the S of "Sicke" is very similar to the first character of the first word on the preceding line which you have as "fyve".

I look forward to part 2!

Just to clarify a couple of matters in Philip's transcript:

The niece is most likely Rebecca Pemmerton.

The first word of the second line is indeed sixe.

Many thanks HHD for that bit. I had managed a few more (6) lines based on what Philip had done but with many gaps and none of the names.

Are there any more names in the probate section.

My error - sorry!  It is indeed sixe, not fyve.

I wasn't sure about Rebecca's surname. (I'm still not sure  ???

As always, horselydown86 - nice work  :)

My Latin is too rusty to transcribe/translate the probate properly,

Philip

I also think Rebecca's surname is Pemmerton. Compare the capital P in Pound(es) at the end of the same line.
