47 Hospital Street, Glasgow 1918

Today I received a copy of my Grand-Fathers Birth Certificate - We didn't know anything about his family as he was adopted.

Today I discovered his birth mother was called Sophia Robertson and he was born 4th September 1918 at 47 Hospital Street in Glasgow.

He was illegitimate which is why Im assuming put up for adoption.

The birth certificate says his birth mother was a housekeeper and what looks to be written as (formally dyers finisher ? - the writing isn't very clear)

I dont know where she was born and I cant find anything out about Hospital Street in the Gorbals area of the town in 1918.

I can remember he was adopted into the Black family from Bargeddie but apart from that, thats all I know .....

Any information would be appreciated

Have you checked to see if there was a paternity Sheriff Court case regarding your grandfather this will give you the name of his reputed father and where his parents were living at the time

Does your g/father have a middle name which may be a clue to his father's name or possibly named after his own g/father?

I can only see one family in Gorbals 1911 with a Sophia Robertson, wrong age although possibly related?

There are others in the Lanark area who could fit such as;

It may be worth checking out family names from the index which match with RD Name & matching reference no. by leaving forename blank after you find a Sophia to see if any family names match your g/father as a possible connection?

Checking the names in other families may hold a clue?

These are held at the National Records of Scotland you can search their indexes although as he was born 1918 not sure if any privacy issues but you could email and ask

I checked Scottish indexes unfortunately Lanark only go up to 1917
