The Wives of William Albert BELLENGER
« on: Thursday 11 October 18 17:49 BST (UK) »
William Albert BELLENGER (1862-1936) was born in South Cerny, Gloucestershire. It should be noted that like other members of his family, he sometimes changed his surname to BERRY, as well as using the normal variations of Bellenger.

In October 1881, he married Annie Jane HEWITT. He was 20 and a bachelor, working as a gardener. She was considerably older at 35 and was a widow. She gave her father's name as John COLBOURN, a farm bailiff.

The couple can be found together in 1891, 1901 and 1911, where her birth place is given as Hungerford, Berks.

Assuming her maiden name was COLBOURN, I have searched for her birth. The best I can come up with is a Jane COLBOURN born in 1841 in Hungerford [Q3 1841 Hungerford 6 178], which may or may not be her. If it is then she was lying about her age when she married, as she would have been 40 not 35. I have also searched for a baptism with no luck.

Given that she was called HEWITT when she married Albert, I searched for a HEWITT-COLBOURN marriage. The only one I could find was 1873, which may or may not be her [Q3 1873 Merthyr Tydfil 11a 660].

So I have no idea when she was born or where she was in 1851, 1861 and 1871.

I believe she died in 1912 in Wandsworth, though I have not yet acquired the death certificate to be sure [Q4 1912 Wandsworth 1d 724].

Anyway in June 1931, William re-married. His new wife was possibly a relative by marriage, as she was called Annie BELLENGER at the time of the marriage. She was aged 66 and a widow. Her father was William MUNDAY (deceased), a general labourer.

I know absolutely nothing about his second wife, as I can't find her in any records.

So in short I need lots of help.

In October 1881, he married Annie Jane HEWITT.

you don't say where, and who witnessed.

census: you don't say what names appear with the couple (or under which surname they appear).
give us a link from (say ) familysearch so we can see if she is consistent, and what clues may be gleaned for any other household members.

is this the correct 1911? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW5L-TPC

The witnesses in 1881 were his step-father James BELLENGER (aka BERRY or PARSONS) and his mother Emily Sarah BELLENGER. I don't think his mother ever married his step-father, so his step-father using the Bellenger name was a convenience.

In 1891 they are in Groton Road, Wandsworth using the name BERRY.
In 1901 and 1911, they are still in Groton Road, but under the BELLENGER name.

Your reference is correct.

Is she consistent as regards her age (barring the marriage cert)?

I can't find the family on familysearch census to see.

No she was not consistent:
1881 - 35 = 1846
1891 - 36 = 1855
1901 - 66 = 1835
1911 - 69 = 1842
1912 - 71 = 1841

Very interesting that the two children should be together in Leyton in 1881. But where were their parents?

Anyway in June 1931, William re-married. His new wife was possibly a relative by marriage, as she was called Annie BELLENGER at the time of the marriage. She was aged 66 and a widow. Her father was William MUNDAY (deceased), a general labourer.

I know absolutely nothing about his second wife, as I can't find her in any records.

It's a long shot, but there is a possible:
1871 census RG10/1563 p9 Church Row, Wing, Bucks
William MUNDAY, 44, sawyer; wife Fanny, 46; children Ann 8, Charles 14, George 6 - all born in Wing
1901 census RD163, sched 76, piece 8426 27 King Street Nthampton
Josiah Sturmer BILLINGHAM, 42, bookseller
Annie BILLINGHAM, wife, 48, born Wing
William MUNDAY, father in law, 84, pensioner, born Wing
and four children age 7 to 14.

Could BILLINGHAM have been confused with BELLINGER?

ADDED: Best to ignore this - Josiah S BILLINGHAM died Mar qtr 1954 age 84 in Northampton.
