That solves it for me I think except for one question
Although she had married a Simmons I suppose when she registered her childrens birth through the second marriage to Thomas Fairless she used her maiden name Walton

Thank you all.  You are all so helpful and I really appreciate it

on birth registration the mother's maiden name is listed - not the name of the last marriage partner

I wonder if she married someone else before Mr Simmons???

there is a marriage 29 Feb 1830
Margaret Walton
Jeremiah Summers

could this be a mistranscription - I have found Summers transcribed as Summons - could this then be transcribed as Simmons???

and is it the correct marriage???

Oh dear more puzzles

It certainly looks like it may be a candidate.  Some of the writing must of been awful to make out when transcribing

In case you're interested, there is a lovely obit for George WALTON (shoemaker) who died in 1865, in Sunderland. Whilst the age given in the obit is 96 which doesn't quite tally with his age in the 1851 and 1861 census, he is the only shoemaker of that name and approximate age that I can see in the area. Says he had 14 children, 70 grandchildren and 27 "grand grand children".
Shields Daily Gazette, December 2, 1865

I could transcribe it if you don't have access.  :)

Hello Jim

I checked in Local Studies in Sunderland for the two marriages, as mentioned previous Thomas Fairless & Margaret Simmons married in Holy Trinity Church Sunderland on the 22nd February 1824. Could not find a marriage in Sunderland for Thomas Fairless & Margaret Walton.
Also checked for baptisms for Sarah (1834) & Margaret (1837) with no luck, even though Family Search give their births as Sunderland.
Did find two burials which may be of interest:
Thomas Fairless aged 49 years of East Moor Street was buried 25th December 1846 in Holy Trinity Churchyard Sunderland.
Margaret Fairless aged 36 years was buried 3rd February 1838 also in Holy Trinity Churchyard.
Will be going back to Local Studies on Monday if you require a copy of the marriage and burials let me know and I will forward them to you.
Will also take a closer look for the baptisms.

A copy would be appreciated.

Ancestry also gives the childrens birth as Sunderland on their records but its odd as it does not give a baptism just a birth date

Baptism of Sarah Fairless was Nov 11th 1835 in Sunderland.

It is image 408 in the Bishop's Transcripts Sunderland 1830-1837.

Sarah  daughter of Thomas Fairless and Margaret Walton. Abode: East Moor Street. Father's occupation; Pilot.

Baptism of Margaret Fairless 3 Feb 1838

It is image 22 in the Bt's Sunderland 1837 - 1842

Margaret daughter of Thomas Fairless and Margaret Walton Abode:Carr's Yard. Father's occupation; Pilot.

The marriage of Thomas Fairless and Margaret Simmons can also be found in the Sunderland Bt's - worth noting that they both sign with "x". (It is image 317 in the Sunderland Bt's 1830-1837).

I cannot find the marriage of Jeremiah Summers and Margaret Walton in the Sunderland Bt's - there are gaps  in them. I would therefore assume that the transcription of their marriage  has come from the parish records.

There is this newspaper notice 6 March 1830 Durham County Advertiser;

"At Sunderland, on Friday last, Jeremiah Summers to Miss Margaret Walton".

Has anyone found the Fairless family in the 1841 census? I have looked and failed! I do note that there is an article in the Newcastle Journal 26 Dec 1846 regarding an inquest in Sunderland on the body of Thomas Fairless, Pilot.
