Thanks for the replies everyone! This is all fascinating stuff.  :)

I'm pretty sure my ancestor and his relatives were part of that influx, Medpat. They all came up from Rock, Worcestershire (I think maybe via the canals) and settled in Wolverhampton, at least temporarily. It's nice to learn more about the church that at least for one generation formed such a focal point of my family's history!

It sounds like a lot of quite complex family history tangles are focused on St Peters.  ;D

Some of my relatives from cheslyn hay and surrounding areas got married in st peters in Wolverhampton because there was n't a C of E church till st marks great wyrley was built. Others used st Matthews in Walsall, Bloxwich All Saints or Cannock St Luke.
