1861 census John Sibley
« on: Saturday 13 October 18 16:19 BST (UK) »
1861 census Page Number   2 Registration Number RG09 Piece/Folio 175 / 38 page 2; 5 Carlisle St; John is a dealer in lamps in 1851 HO107; Piece: 1510; Folio: 102; Page: 12 & lamp fitter in 1871  RG10; Piece: 145; Folio: 10; Page: 13.

Does it read 'Dealer' after his crossed out profession in 1861 please? Wonder why he went from a dealer to a fitter?

Thanks.

Yes it does say dealer. Looking at his directory entries:

1851 Oil merchant
1856 Oil merchant
1859 Oil merchant
1869 not listed - James Welch, french polisher is at 5 Carlisle Street

I certainly read that as Dealer.

Who knows......  There is always a possibility that the enumerator corrected the wrong one and it should have related to someone else on the page.

Thank you both; at first I read 'Dead' but as he was alive for the 1871...

Nov 1869 daughter Emma Louisa's marriage - she is of Carlisle St, so perhaps John had set up business only elsewhere.

Ah so based on Shaun's info, it may have meant to read Oil Dealer and too many words were crossed out.
