One for someone with some medical knowledge - SOLVED (ALMOST DEFINITELY)
« on: Saturday 13 October 18 17:45 BST (UK) »
Hi, hoping someone can decipher the illness near the bottom of the naval service record (hopefully) attached? It looks a bit like ?iural? carcinoma of the nose but I get no hits when googling that. 'Nasal' carcinoma of the nose sounds too clumsy to me, and also doesn't remotely look like that, so I'm stumped.
It was obviously serious though - he was discharged in January and dead by the end of the year...

Yeah, 'iwal' was my first impression. And comparing it with the other letters elsewhere, don't think it could be 'aural' either. Unless of course, some bits were filled in by different people. So not sure we can blame this entirely on doctors' handwriting  ;)

I think the final word could be "nares" - which are the nostrils.

Now you're just confusing the issue  :P But actually, yes, I did initially think the E in Nose looked a bit too long...

Wonder if it could be dual,in other words both nostrils?
Can’t find anything in dictionary.
I’ll not sleep tonight now—

Tsch, I thought that of all my conundrums, this one would be the most easily solved... I can kind of see it might be dual or dural, though googling the latter really just brings up 'ductal carcinoma' and I'm sure the word isn't Ductal. It looks to me like the person who wrote that bit didn't write much else on the form, so it's hard to compare.

Suppose I could always order the death cert, though I've a limited budget for them and as he's a GG-Uncle rather than a direct ancestor, it's harder to justify. Still, thanks for your help so far - let me know if inspiration strikes!
