Thank you all so much for such quick replies. Sad to see that he was born in the workhouse but then so many were. Daithi you are amazing I thought I have looked at those irish genealogy records and finding his mother in 1901 wow!. Now I see she was from Co Westmeath. Great to have her maiden name that will set me off on a good track. William and Julia were probably married in Westmeath somewhere.

I do think I have the correct William in the 1911 census. I know he had children Annie and Julia then also my uncle by marriage William Maher and I think I remember hearing of a Paddy and Tom, younger again.

Thank you Sinan thank you for the links. So much was discussed this last week about so many on the Leinster that I though I should set off to find a little about William.

Thank you Hallmark for those great details.
Because of the commemorations the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and Leinster Centenary Committee arranged for a new headstone on his grave and that was erected on 7 October with a very moving ceremony. I have a photo of this but am uncertain how to post.

Wow Hallmark!! Wonderful find. The medals and watch have been donated by the family to the Maritime Museum in Dún Laoghaire. We went to see them during the commemoration week.

Seems strange that he appears to have no sibling's nor does there seem to be a marriage for his parents, as he was born in the South Dublin Workhouse i suggest you try the Workhouse records which may give some more info.
Perhaps he was illigitimite and why was'nt he born in the Rathdown Workhouse
