Just a thought, i remember people used to make rings from coins such as a penny.  They would drill a hole in the centre then drive a mandrel through to enlarge it.  Unless the lettering was removed it would appear on the edges or wherever.  I just wondered if the links could have been made in such a manner.

Prior to reading any replies, I thought they looked like coins.

Have you thought about taking them to a Museum, Antiques place or Archaeologist to see if anyone can identify what they could be?
