This is the problem I can't find them on any other census as adults . He is on the new York police census age 20  about 13 years earlier but only an index so no occupation  his dad was a bookeeper.

His name is James Melvin dob 14 Jan 1870  Manhattan new York .
1870 census living in the post office ward 20 district 7 nee York.
1880 living west 40th st new York City
1890 living  election districh 20 assembly district 17 new York City police census index only
1900  not living with his family in East 52nd st new York
1905 living with wife Hannah melvin (maddox) and her mum Sarah  maddox on w 39th st manhattan ny city. This is the one they are both professionals?
I can't find them again after that!

I can't find them again after that!

1905 census? Did you mean 1910? I tried searching for James, with the details above, in the 1910 census and drew a blank I'm afraid. I just wanted to have a look around in case others had the same occupation and the writing was clearer.  :-\

Going back to "page 1" the writing is clearer and there are lots of "professionals" - it must have had a specific meaning at that time (or maybe a vague meaning)?

Not that it helps, but column 8 has a "W" for all three, meaning they were paid a wage or salary.

Thanks for checking it out we still don't know what job it is but at least we know what it says  on the census. Maybe it meant skilled worker who knows?
