I'm sure K.Garrad would be able to help with this one. I have sent him a message to ask him to take a look for you.

For starters, this old Coat-of-Arms has 3 crests!
The crest is the bit which sits on top of a helmet, which in itself sits on top of the shield.

I would describe it as quarterly of 6.
The 3 crests obviously belong to 3 noble families.

I'll dig around and see what I can find.

In English Heraldry those helmets would likely be Sovereign's helmets; they were in gold, full-faced, with 6 bars.
Lesser nobility had different helmets, either in profile or between profile and full-faced.

That's a good website!
It's funny reading something like that when you live in that country (and your hubby comes from Wilhelmshaven, which is not technically Ostfriesland, but the people tend to have the same <stubborn ;)> traits) and are used to the customs.

Kerril: If it is a large cast iron plate, it could well be an "Ofenplatte" - a decorative plate for a chimney/stove.
Here's one for sale locally:
https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/alte-ofenplatte/965879999-240-3059

It is from an old house in Braunschweig. BS is in the state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) and the coat of arms for Niedersachsen is

which is the image on the plate.

So your plate probably adorned a Kachelofen in an old house in Ostfriesland or may possibly have been a fireback in an open fireplace.

Whatever - it would probably tell some interesting stories, if it could talk..!

Best regards,
Karen
