Me too I mistook Sawyer for Lawyer on a census record. :-[ :-[

I knew from the address that there was no way a professional gentleman would be living in that particular street and it was a few hundred yards from a sawmill.

Still took a wee while for the penny to drop  ;D ;D

I've seen a few Tailors who should be Sailors, more bad handwriting.

I've seen a few Tailors who should be Sailors, more bad handwriting.

Usually the other way round - people read Sailor when it’s actually Tailor with an old-fashioned T.

Actual sailors are more usually entered as “mariner”

I have one which looks like Tailor on his death certificate but he was actually a Sailor.

Again down to the handwriting.

Another easily confused pair is Farmer and Tanner.  My wife and her cousin each got a handwritten copy of the same certificate, with one Tanner and one Farmer.  In the end the cousin was granted access to the original record to make up his own mind.  Actually it wasn't difficult as the ancestor had been a tanner for a long time ....

I have one family recorded in the census as Lawyer, when the family name is Sawyer, so some people appear to have difficulty deciphering S's and L's
