ST Joseph's Home.Newcastle.
« on: Tuesday 16 October 18 01:01 BST (UK) »
Hi Folk's,could anyone shed some light on this place? My Gt Gt Grandfather John Ford Smith
was living there at the time of the 1901 Cencus.He was a widower  around his mid seventies
and originally from Buckinghamshire but in 1851 resided in Newcastle then 1861-91 Gateshead.
was it what we would now call a retirement home? I believe it was run by nun's which I tend to
associate with Catholicism but the family were not,any help would be appreciated.
Regard's Steve.

Census reference is RG13/4774 f174 p3

John Smith is described as an inmate lunatic, he possibly had a form of dementia as this is what would probably happen to someone like him at that time.

The home was St Joseph's home and was described on the 1901 as A charitable Institution run by the Little sisters of the poor and was located in George Road, Newcastle.

1st page of the 1901 Census for St Josephs has it as a Charitable Institution conducted by the Little Sister of the Poor.

I am sure they would have taken in non Catholics also.

He doesnt appear on 1911 Census so this looks like his Death Reg;
June 1910

If you are going to the library soon check the Elswick burial records first for that time period.  I think he may possibly be there if he had been at St Joseph.  If you do find him there this will help narrow down what Evening Chronicle editions to look for death notice.

There is a blue file with microfilm numbers of the various relevant microfilms for cemeteries on the left hand side of filing cabinets beside microfilm readers on 6th floor.
