Please could you look up parish records of
JEWELL, HENRY        mother maiden name JEWELL
GRO Reference: 1860  S Quarter in BIDEFORD UNION  Volume 05B  Page 485    I believe this to be my man The above is taken from GRO Does it mean mother was unmarried or was just married to a Jewell
 I can see his marriage in 1880 in Bideford to Mary Ann Paddon Thanks

Normally if a child was illegitimate then there would be no mothers maiden surname on the index. 

Do you have him on census prior to his marriage.  What information does his marriage give

There’s also a Henry Jewell birth registered in Bideford Sep qtr 1859 (no mmn).

One of them may be the Henry Jewell, “infant”, buried at Clovelly on 15 July 1860.

there is a marriage registered dec qtr 1859 vol 5b pg 945 at Bideford with John Jewell and Mary Ann Jewell the only 2 names on the page. They are living in Clovelly, no children, in 1861 RG9/1505 folio 105 pg 11 so they may account for the birth reg with mmn Jewell and the Clovelly burial.


It's looks like Alwington baptisms are not online for that period, but there is an opc

Thanks everyone for your help No I cant find him before his marriage in 1880 In 1881 census he is living with Mary A nee Paddon and son Willam J Jewell son at 6 Bilton Terr Bideford He is working as a Brewers Labourer Birth date given as 1861 Alwington
