Hi can someone tell me the meaning of the letters O V S P OR I in the 5th column of 1939 index please.

I'm guessing owner/ visitor /patient / inmate / would S be servant ?

Can you screen shot a small clip of the letters,or tell us who it is and where they are so we can look for ourselves.

It refers only to entries in institutions and means Officer, Visitor, Servant, Patient, or Inmate.

So are you saying that your person has all of the letters after their name?

Surely only one of them would apply (after reading Dawn and Rosie's explanations)

Sorry I didn't make myself clear Carol it is a heading on the 5th column.

So if I understand it the person was a servant at the hostel where she was listed as a domestic with the letter S. I can't post it as it is a bit delicate and I am doing it for a friend.

is there no mention of an occupation in the personal occupation column?
