Three Mile House
« on: Wednesday 17 October 18 09:52 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me out. I've been looking at various family documents from the 1890s through to the 1920s on which family members have listed their address as Three Mile House, or Three Mile Cottage, Cardonald.
A bit of a search shows that it was situated equidistant between Paisley and Glasgow, but what was it - an area? a pub? a building? It seems a bit vague for an address.

thanks for any help!

I just google mapped the above and came up with 3 Mile Veterinary Centre, a block of shops, which I know have been there for 45 years and probably longer. It is situated on Paisley Road West, 3 miles from the centre of Paisley & Glasgow. My guess is that this may be the site of your house?

I didn't think this would be so easy to find...see this Ordnance Survey name book from the 1850's: https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/renfrewshire-os-name-books-1856-1857/renfrewshire-volume-01/87

Hi yes I saw all of those when I googled it.
But I'm not clear on whether it is specifically the pub, or a group of buildings or an area.

I don't think my ancestors ran or had any involvement with a pub, unless they just lived above it. The entry on the Old Halfway House pub doesn't mention when it was named Three Mile House, or Cottage. There is an old thread on this site which mentions it. I just wondered whether anyone with local knowledge knew.

3-Mile vet is opposite Pound Stretcher and near the junction with Kinross Avenue.
On older maps of Glasgow, Three Mile House / Halfway House looks to be situated further East at the bottom right hand tip of Craigton Cemetery, where Halfway Houses Post Office is.

Ah yes - says it is 'A small village or hamlet on the Paisley road about 3 miles from Glasgow'.

So it was a village on the Lanarks / Renfrews border which had a school and a pub called the Half Way House

Thanks Harrywrag!

If you can locate your family on the censuses and look at the various neighbouring properties, you may be able to narrow down the location of their house in relation to landmarks such as the Smithy or the pub. Good luck.
