James CROAL, born 1830 Cowgate, Edinburgh, Scotland
« on: Wednesday 17 October 18 14:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,

James CROAL, a Parkhurst Boy, disembarked at Fremantle from the "Shepherd" on 26/10/1843 and according to the 1849 Census was a Labourer in Toodyay.   There are a couple of references to him on TROVE as the victim of theft in the 1850s but no other details as far as the WA BDM Index is concerned.

Can anyone help please?

Thank you,

BAC3

Hi Tony,

I am in NSW, so far from the WA Archives, and I realise you are even far further away from them.  I can see that it may be that there's archival material that needs to be examined in person :

I hope there are regular RChatters based in Perth WA who may be able to look up there.

Cheers,   JM

This 106 page pdf may be useful for tips on researching WA convicts

This may be James with family on the 1841 Scottish census:

Carnegie St 34, Edinburgh

Anne Croal 40
Davie 20 printer
James 12 Printer ap
Anne 10
John 8
Robert 3

all born Midlothian

No 'father' present. (You might find that father's name was Davie/d or James).

attaching a pdf of sorts  ::)

Shhhhhhhhhh .... I will get there,  I will  ::)

nope,  the file is too large.   So it is for:
413 Jame CROAL
HO 24/15 P. 11 parkhurst register

Likely Tony will have already accessed it, but it does mention that he was apprenticed to a W Barker, as a shoemaker.   He was later noted as a shepherd, working on his own account.  and then .... TR 13, shepherd, (master as J SEWELL), indentures have expired.... HE HAS NOT YET APPLIED FOR HIS WAGES...  (my capitals, 'n colour etc to highlight ... not collected wages ... why not ... perhaps ill/or worse ...) .... no date but I think would be circa 1850 ish as indentures were 5 years.

Haha. If James was convicted in 1840 that's certainly not him in the 1841 census. :)
